The Joint offers niche service, affordable care to patients

Doug Stewart never dreamed he would own and operate a business in the one industry that was able to save his father from a potential fatal condition.

In 1957, at the age of 22, Stewart's father Richard was diagnosed with scleroderma and given only about three months to live. Scleroderma is a connective tissue disease that involves changes in the skin, blood vessels, muscles and internal organs.

"It's a nasty disease," he said. "Your body goes against your healthy tissue and destroys it."

Against the odds, Stewart's father lived 2-1/2 years but was in a great deal of pain, unable to move and was suffering internal bleeding. Again, doctors told the family he would not survive much longer. Desperate for help, the family learned of a cousin in Oklahoma City that was a chiropractor and offered to help.

"We all went to his clinic and stayed there while my dad was being treated by the doctor on a daily basis," Stewart recalled. "Within days the internal bleeding stopped."

After a month of treatment, the doctor believed he had completed the treatment and the family moved back to Kansas.

"As time went on, he continued to improve," Stewart said. "He went on to live a very rich life. He always attributed the remission of the scleroderma to the chiropractic treatment he received."

Stewart's father passed away at the age of 77; and to honor him, Stewart is dedicating his new business to him. Stewart will celebrate the grand opening of The Joint Jan. 25. Located in Market Street, The Joint is a franchise concept that specializes in convenient and affordable chiropractic care.

Aligning a plan

After retiring, Stewart was contacted by a friend about partnering on a business venture. But when it turned out not to be a good fit for him and his wife, Susan, Stewart put the idea on the back burner. During a Christmas party, another friend mentioned a service that helps match potential business owners with franchises for the right fit.

"She ended up giving me four different franchises to consider," he said. "One of them was The Joint."

However, Stewart first dismissed the idea of The Joint thinking running a chiropractic clinic wasn't what he was looking for.

"But I decided to talk to the regional developers for The Joint," he said. "As I began to study the franchise, I realized it had a lot of qualities I was looking for in a business."

Stewart said he wanted a franchise with few employees, no inventory and no accounts receivable. He said The Joint seems to fill a void in the community.

After six months of research and visiting other locations, the Stewarts decided The Joint was the venture for them and opened their first location Dec. 28.

The way the business works, Stewart explained, is clients are able to stop in, have an adjustment by a certified chiropractor and in less than 20 minutes, be on their
