A chiropractic care franchise with more than 400 locations nationwide has opened its first New York office in Tonawanda at 1725 Sheridan Drive.

"The Joint … the Chiropractic Place" opened in September, said Marc Ressler, regional developer for The Joint, who noted that it is a wellness clinic.

"There's been tons of research showing regular chiropractic adjustments lead to a healthier lifestyle in children, adults and seniors," said Ressler, adding, "What The Joint does is take chiropractic care and make it convenient and affordable for people to access."

The Joint stands out from other chiropractic offices in that it does not require appointments, he noted. It is an appointment-free, walk-in clinic. Additionally, it offers extended hours. The hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

"The biggest mistake people make is only going to the chiropractor when they're having pain," said Ressler, "but really to reap the benefits of chiropractic care, you need to go for regular adjustments, the same way you would incorporate going to the gym or eating healthy."

The services are very affordable, said Ressler. The Joint offers a $19 introductory offer, which includes an exam, consultation and first adjustment. Patients are usually in and out of the clinic quickly, with routine adjustments lasting five to 10 minutes. The Joint also offers package deals, such as the wellness package, which is four adjustments for $49. Ressler noted that a first visit at other offices could cost as much as $300.

Dr. Richard Soukup is the clinic director of the Tonawanda location. For those who are new to chiropractic care, he said, there is nothing to fear.

"You go to the gym on a regular basis, and we're the same for alignment of the spine," he said. "Your true core is your spine. You want that properly aligned and moving properly before anything else."

He said some classic symptoms of a misaligned spine are migraine headaches, a sense of being off-balance or posture being askew.
