The Legend of Tarzan — And Chiropractic
By Sara Butler
I’m going to admit something to all of you fine people: I’m a sucker for Tarzan. Especially if The Legend of Tarzan is being played by a certain Swedish demigod who spends most of the movie wild-eyed, with his hair down and his muscles bulging and … well, I digress.
I recently saw the newest incarnation of Tarzan at the movies and in between all the gorilla-fighting shirtlessness I began thinking about something important: There are people who have no access to chiropractic care. I mean, Tarzan was raised by an ape -- and The Joint hasn’t exactly spread to the nearest tree in the African jungle. Not yet, anyway. If people don’t have access to chiropractic care -- or realize they have access to affordable chiropractic care -- throughout the course of their lives, what are they missing out on? Well, a lot actually!
Mood Boosting Power!
Tarzan may have an 8-pack, which made me very happy, but he seemed a little upset about Jane getting dragged into that diamond mining kerfuffle. If he was able to regularly access chiropractic care he may not have been so brooding and realized there are other fish in the sea, if you know what I mean.
Regular chiropractic care has been shown to give you a mood boost through helping your body balance out its hormones. Hormones that can damage your health, such as the stress hormone cortisol, and good hormones such as dopamine, can have a big impact on how you’re feeling. Achieving and maintaining balance in your body is one of the goals of chiropractic care, helping free you from stress and boosting your mood is par for the chiropractic course.
By the way, because he’s Tarzan and despite his broodiness, he had to do what’s right. He had to save Jane, his wife. And deep down, I’m OK with that.
You spend about a third of your life asleep. Once Tarzan reached London, I’m sure he had a nice, comfortable and supportive bed. Sleeping in the jungle can’t be easy on the old spine. There’s all those bumps and imperfections on the jungle floor -- not to mention the bugs, tigers and man-clobbering apes -- and those tree branches are no picnic either. I went camping once, so I think I can speak from experience.
A lot of adults have trouble sleeping, and as many as 40 million Americans have some kind of chronic sleep problem. Chiropractic can help improve your sleep by helping your muscles relax and improving the nerve flow from your central nervous system when joint restrictions (subluxations) are worked out of the spine. This helps improve the signals from your brain to the rest of your body, which may also help reduce your body’s stress response -- making sleep easier.
If your lack of sleep is caused by chronic pain or headaches, chiropractic might be able to help you find relief so you can hitch a ride to the land of Nod every night for a restful and restorative sleep, too.
OK – I’m not under the impression Tarzan needs help in this area, but I think it’s safe to say most of us could use a boost! I’d feel pretty energized if I could hang out with the lord of the jungle everyday, but because he’s a fictional character, I’m better off relying on chiropractic care for that little boost of energy.
As with sleep, the removal of interference in the form of subluxations from the central nervous system helps to restore the flow of energy and information between your brain and the rest of your body. That helps reduce fatigue and give you that little kick you need to get through your day -- a day that hopefully won’t involve swinging from any vines. But, you know, whatever floats your boat.
Bolster the Immune System
In the wild, the sniffles may be a life or death situation! A predator who sees weakness will swoop in – and Tarzan didn’t get to be Tarzan by loading up on Benadryl. I think it’s safe to assume Tarzan had a pretty solid immune system.
The goal of chiropractic care is to bring balance to your body and your central nervous system. When your brain can send and receive signals free from interference, it can help with many aspects of the way your body functions, including your immune system. This can mean many things, including faster recovery from illness and fewer episodes of sickness over time. All that from an adjustment! That will make you scream your approval at the top of your lungs.
Me Chiropractor, You Patient
The point of all of this is that chiropractic can help with a lot more than just back and neck discomfort. I’m sure Tarzan has his fair share of aches and pains, although I felt no pain watching him for two hours (have I mentioned he was shirtless?). If he had access to chiropractic care it could have made a big difference in his life, just as it either has made or can make in yours. Can you imagine Tarzan more flexible with a greater range of motion? Can you imagine yourself that way?
You know, The Legend of Tarzan tells us that the jungle preys on the old, the sick, the wounded and the weak. There are plenty of those in the concrete jungle, too, and all of them could benefit from chiropractic care. But so too can those who feel healthy enough to swing through the trees.
If you haven’t been into The Joint to see your chiropractor lately, what’s stopping you? And don’t use thwarting an evil diamond mine plot as an excuse because (spoiler alert) Tarzan already took care of it!
