So Good it’s Scary: October is Chiropractic Health Month!

October is one of the best months of the whole year. Axial tilt is in full effect, finally bringing that nip in the air. The leaves on the trees are changing and pumpkin spice permeates all things – even things it clearly shouldn’t. Plus, it’s decorative gourd season and nothing says autumn quite like shellacked vegetables arranged artfully in a basket -- am I right?

Another, perhaps lesser known, reason that October is so great is that it’s National Chiropractic Health Month. There’s less than a week left, so strap on your supportive, low-heeled yet stylish shoes and let’s get this chiropractic party started!

It’s All About Conservative Care

I know, lately when the word conservative is mentioned you probably think of politics. However, when you’re talking about health care, conservative means something a lot different. For people with back and neck pain, chiropractic is a non-surgical option to help them rehabilitate their spine.

Part of what makes chiropractic such a great choice is that it falls under the umbrella of conservative care. Unfortunately, many people tend to first go for riskier and more invasive therapies before choosing chiropractic. This is exactly why the American Chiropractic Association named October National Chiropractic Health Month – to help bring awareness to the fact that chiropractic care is an option for people suffering from back and neck pain that doesn’t involve surgery or drugs. It’s natural, it’s patient-centered, and your chiropractor treats you as a whole person, not just a condition to diagnose.

Why It’s So Important

Let’s sit down that pumpkin spice latte and leave those beautiful decorative gourds behind for just one minute while we get real. In this country, when people seek care for chronic pain conditions, they are often prescribed opioid painkillers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that as many as 25 percent of people who use opioids long-term struggle with addiction. Just think of how many people you may know in your own life that struggle with addiction -- that’s a sobering statistic.

The fact that opioid addiction in the United States is so prevalent makes it even more important to seek ways to treat pain without drugs. Now it seems the rest of the world may finally be catching up to what everyone in the chiropractic field has always known -- conservative treatment for chronic pain is vital to the overall health and wellness of every single person in this country.

When you utilize treatments such as chiropractic care, you are being proactive in your own health and standing up to the statistics, refusing to be another person who struggles with opioid addiction. But you’re on your own with that pumpkin spice habit.
