Electronic Health Records for Chiropractic Clinics
The medical field has been revolutionized by technology, potentially more than any other professional sector. The use of technology in medical facilities, insurance companies, and many other stakeholders has been such an important development in the field as so many different processes have been drastically improved with technological components. One of the most important technological developments has been the use of electronic health records.
Electronic health records means that rather than having handwritten files for a patient’s health history and insurance coverage, the patient’s health records are stored in an electronic database that can be accessed from multiple locations within a practice, as well as from multiple different facilities within a health system. In chiropractic care clinics, the use of electronic health records has been extremely useful in managing care pathways for their patient
The reality is that many chiropractic care clinics throughout the country are growing rapidly as the discipline of chiropractic care gains recognition as an effective care pathway for musculoskeletal problems. As these clinics grow, the patient population increases and managing health records becomes much more convoluted. If these records were contained in handwritten documents in a file cabinet, it would be nearly impossible to handle patient records as the practice expands. With the advent of electronic health records, the patient’s records and insurance information is kept in once central location and can be accessed on all computers in the practice.
Additionally, any modification that the chiropractor makes to a patient’s care pathway can be directly entered into the system just seconds after a treatment intervention is enacted. Rather than writing down information on a file, transferring the file to reception, and the reception storing it in the proper section of health records storage, the health records are altered directly in the computer system to avoid errors in the transferring of records.
Overall, electronic health records have revolutionized the process of care management and practice operations. Moving forward we can expect to see more innovation in healthcare technology but at the moment, electronic health records have given us such utility in the healthcare industry.
