It seems as if all of the time you are bombarded with the latest “superfood”. These foods may claim amazing health benefits but can only be grown in the deepest of tropical jungles, and that translates to high prices for you at the store. The thing is, that there are foods that are chock full of vitamins and minerals and pack a powerful nutritional punch that you can easily find, and won’t cost you a fortune. Here are some powerhouse foods that are good for your body and your pocketbook.

Allium Family

Foods from this family can help to fight infections and ease digestion. These are chives, scallions, and garlic. Those are easy to find and easy to incorporate into most recipes!

Amaranthaceae Family

These can help to restore iron levels and that helps to fight fatigue and boost your energy! These include beet greens, Swiss chard and spinach. Deep greens are great for you!

Asteraceae Family

This is the happy sunflower family and it helps to promote a healthy liver and digestion. It also has anti-inflammatory benefits! It includes the workhorse that is iceberg lettuce, dandelions (yes – they’re edible!), endive, chicory, leaf lettuce and romaine lettuce. Very cost-efficient and good for you!

Brassicaceae Family

These are cruciferous vegetables might help to promote healing and may help with inflammation. You can get these benefits through arugula, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, collard greens, kale, mustard greens, turnip greens and watercress.

Cucurbitaceae Family

This family can help to improve your vision. Get it with pumpkin and other orange veggies!

Solanaceae Family

This family may help to strengthen bones, improve vision and help to promote healthier skin! You can’t lose with tomatoes and red bell peppers. You know, your classic night out for Italian!

Rosaecae Family

This family can help with the aging process, inflammation and could help to regulate blood glucose. Strawberries are the king of this family, so include their tart deliciousness where ever you can!

Rutaceae Family

This family can help to purify the kidneys and liver and help to improve digestion, skin and vision. Pucker up, because lemons are what you need to incorporate for these benefits!

Umbelliferae Family

This family may have antibacterial benefits along with skin and vision improvement and may help to ease constipation as well as boost immunity. Include carrots and parsley in your diet to reap these benefits!
