How Taking a Seat is Ruining Your Health

By Genevieve Cunnngham

There’s no getting around the fact that, as a society, we do a lot of sitting. A large portion of us sit at work, many of us sit for hours on a commute, and even our recreation time is spent in front of the TV or a technological device. While this may not seem like a big deal in our world today, the amount of sitting that we do is actually causing great detriment to our health. Take a look at these ways in which sitting is causing health problems, followed by what you can do about it.

Common Health Conditions Caused by Excessive Sitting

Though many of these health conditions can be caused by other things as well, they very often accompany excessive sitting. Some side effects include:

  • Decreased Efficiency in Digestion - A poor or weak digestive system has been linked to hours of sitting. The digestive tract simply works better when we are upright for at least part of our day. If yours slows down or is in pain, check your sitting habits.

  • Weak Cardiovascular System - The circulation in the body is dependent on your movement and activity. When we sit, it can cause your circulation to be slower, and can even cause deadly blood clots in extreme situations.

  • Back Pain - While this may seem mild compared to the above mentioned problems, poor back health can bring on a list of problems on its own. Excessive sitting can lead to misalignments of the vertebrae of the spine, which can then cause pain, swelling, headaches, and a weak immune system, among many other symptoms.

Solutions for the Sitting Problem

  • Adjust Your Workspace - Since a lot of sitting is done at the office, try alternating between a sitting desk and a standing one. If you can and over time, try to make the switch permanently. This can help negate the many hours spent in the sitting position.

  • Incorporate Exercise - While exercise can’t negate every hour spent sitting, it can certainly help you stay active and mobile. Get adequate exercise at least four or five days a week. And if you can, just make your lifestyle a more active one in general.

  • Get Chiropractic Care - Chiropractors may be able to help keep your back aligned, which can then alleviate many of the symptoms that come from excessive sitting. This is especially true in the case if pain, swelling, and general discomfort in the neck and back.

While most of these solutions will require a little self-discipline and maybe a little research, you will need the help of a professional to get chiropractic care.
