How to Take Advantage of the Power of Laughter

We are all quick to recognize dedication, hard work and preparation as qualities that help us thrive on the job and everywhere else. But perhaps we should also take a closer look at the power of laughter.

A recent Huffington Post article says laughter is more likely to prompt us to reveal our secrets. I can believe that because sharing honest deep down laughter with someone can be a kind of bonding. We become closer and more relaxed with them, and feel like we really know them, which could lead to sharing secrets.

We should note that laughter can do a whole lot more.

Have you ever been in a spot and had laughter bail you out? Laughter is often more likely to help you go the extra mile working the extra shift as it brings new energy and a better mood. Like music when you are exercising, laughter can give you a whole new energy boost.

Laughter can also help you step back and get a grip.

That do or die attitude and the tension that goes with it can float right off when something funny happens and everybody relaxes.

Laughter can also reassure others that things are really OK. I cannot count the times that I have been pounding away on a project, becoming grimmer by the moment, when someone taps me on the shoulder and says something incredibly funny. Just like that, the mood changes and I am the better for it.

Laughter can also be contagious.

It can rescue a situation, easing awkwardness, and be the perfect backup on days when nothing seems to go well. Those are the times when things just inevitably run downhill. That can make the project take longer, or seem like it is taking forever. But that first giggle and then an out and out laugh in the midst of everything will spread and could save the day.

Sometimes, just pausing and finding a way to see the funny side can be the answer you need.

If you have already learned how valuable laughter can be when you get stuck, you may have a ready reserve of impossibly funny stuff, jokes, pictures, and absurd things your friends have done or said. You probably also have your favorite funny movies, and know which friend to call when you have forgotten how to laugh.

Whatever works, keep some ways to tap laughter around and remember to take advantage of this wonderful resource.
