When Life Changes, Reboot Your Exercise

It could be any big change – a new job, a move to another city, a loss in your family, or a change in health. Suddenly you find yourself skipping your morning runs and forgetting to stop at the gym.

Instead of simply letting your exercise plan drop into space, think about ways to retool it and make it work for you as you face life’s new challenges.

An accident or challenging session at work or grad school could soak up all of the hours and your energy. Suddenly you have gained weight and workouts are becoming a distant memory. Now getting back to the gym or out for a run becomes a lot tougher.

Start with a simple retool of the basics to get moving again.

Do a quick review of you – You may have gained weight and lost some muscle and endurance strength. So see how long it takes you to walk a mile or how many plank exercises you can do. Then weigh in and pin any gains.

Now think about your fitness goals- Do you want to be back where you were, or even better? Are you getting ready for a competition or do you want a totally different exercise routine?

Then put the plan down in your computer or on paper on the fridge. The Mayo Clinic suggests getting a little over two hours of aerobic exercise a week, or 75 minutes of intense aerobic exercise.

Be specific – scheduling walking, running, gym workouts or some new efforts like swimming, skating or hiking. Map the times through a weekly schedule.

Then give the new schedule a shot- You may need to start a little slowly or break up the sessions. Stay in touch with your body and your moods. Is this the new exercise routine you really wanted? If not, don’t hesitate to scrap the plan and start over, or sit down and seriously restructure it. The better the fit the more likely you will keep it.

Finally, consider lining up an exercise buddy to keep you on track and make some notes on your posted schedule on ways to tune it up as you give it a test run. And don’t forget to give yourself credit – you put yourself back in the game.

As always, check with your doctor and your chiropractor when you are making exercise changes. Often your chiropractor will have great cardiovascular and strengthening exercises that will keep you moving and injury free.
