Find Out How This Particular Superfruit Helps Sore Muscles

Sore muscles seem to cry out for a soothing massage or a dose of aspirin. But a superfruit drink of tart cherry juice may work best according to new research.

Several research groups have found that drinking tart cherry juice before and after intense exercise seems to ease inflammation and pain. A group in England and another in Vermont came up with similar results. Cherry juice was tested against a placebo drink and the pain scores and strength loss results were lower for the cherry juice drinkers.

In England cyclists were studied, and those in the group that drank cherry juice, were the participants who were found to have far less inflammation throughout the body.

In Vermont, students drinking cherry juice before and after exercise were tested on muscle strength, tenderness and range of movement, and once again, those with the better results had consumed the tart cherry juice. Similar results turned up for my aunt who was experiencing severe gout pain. Her doctor prescribed natural cherry juice and the results were positive. She got results with noticeable pain relief.

Long distance runners are also exploring the effects of tart cherry juice to reduce pain and cut their recovery time down. Distance running racks up a strong inflammatory response followed by tiredness, loss of power and stiffness. Frequently long distance runners turn to aspirin products to keep on going. This can be an unhealthy long term choice. Runners in Oregon were studied using tart cherry juice and placebos. The ones who drank cherry juice said they had much less pain. Researchers decided the greater antioxidant and reduced inflammatory response helped the runners regain their strength moving through the pain process much faster.

Tart cherries have other assets making them better natural choices than aspirin

-Cherries give us a dose of melatonin that works to improve our sleep as we adjust our body clocks.

-Cherries notch up our immune system helping fight some cancers and protect us from heart disease and aging of the brain.

-Cherries are also being studied as inflammation reducers for arthritis and fibromyalgia. They are believed to be effective agents here just as they were for my aunt’s gout.

With this much research and so many positive results, tart cherry juice will probably continue to be studied and used as a natural solution. From a practical standpoint, tart cherry juice can be easily added to a variety of meals. As always, when you are trying new diet ideas start with your doctor for a review of your diet and your health.
