How You Can Use Your Mind to Relieve Pain

Every day aches and pains are just a part of life. Whether you are dealing with migraines or a sore muscle, you might be tempted to reach for an over the counter pain reliever to go find relief. For mild pain, consider trying one of these remedies and use your thoughts as your medicine.

Think about your favorite food.

Meditation and controlled breathing.
Meditations and mindful breathing can be one of the greatest pain remedies. Meditation has been found to reduce pain intensity up to 70 percent and pain unpleasantness up to 93 percent. Practicing deep breathing, from your belly, to engage the parasympathetic nervous system and help bring a calming response to pain.

Listening to music.
Creating a distraction can bring instant relief from pain. Positive distractions from music or pleasant company can reduce pain from arthritis and anxiety. Avoid focusing on the point of pain, if you feel achy knees, focus on parts of your face or hands—simply bringing attention elsewhere reducing intense pain. Watch your favorite film, or read a book, just remember that focusing on the pain only makes it worse.

Writing or other creative activities.
Writing your thoughts has been found to bring pain relief in various studies. Doing activities that spark creativity and get you away from worry and focusing on pain are great exercises to practice daily. Try writing for 15 minutes every night before bed, or taking up a new form of art that you like. Try painting, photography, or taking up a new instrument, it may help take your mind away from pain.

Laughing.
Laughing is one of the best forms of medicine. This is partly related to the release of endorphins which eases the feelings of pain. Experts suggest that even just smiling can lift your mood and make pain more tolerable. If you are feeling chronic pain or are afflicted with illness, spend time around those who make you laugh and enjoy humorous videos to feel better faster.
