Combat Nosebleeds With Chiropractic Treatment

Having never experienced one, I do not know the pain or emotional toil that having a nosebleed can have. However, being in and around sports my entire life, I have seen my fair share of nosebleeds, breaks and bumps and bruises. Nosebleeds are part of any contact sport, some noses are more sensitive than others, and can start the flow of blood at the touch of a nostril. Those with super sensitive and fragile noses, and who experience nose bleeds on a regular basis sometimes go through rigorous amounts of methods to try to alleviate the bleeding from happening so frequently. Some even go as far as to cauterize the inside of the nose with silver nitrate in order to stop bleeding happening so much. Whatever the method used, one that most people do not associate with nosebleeds is chiropractic care.

Epistaxis is the clinical name for nosebleeds. Often they arise from a blow to the nose or weakening of the nasal membranes due to a cold or allergies. Highly debated, the National health Service has deemed the correct way to treat a nosebleed as being the method in which leaning forward and pinching the top of the nose occurs, all while breathing through the mouth. The blood will clot on its own and the bleeding will stop.

Most cases of severe epistaxis are caused by a subluxation of the atlas vertebrae at the peak of the neck. Common injuries to this area are seen in car crashes and whiplash incidents. Chiropractors have found that in the course of treatment of the neck and upper spine, recurrent nosebleeds often cease. Properly adjusting these areas, as they are all interconnected, generally helps to stop frequent bleeding. In many cases when they recur, the spine is again found to be in need of correction and the epistaxis will stop when the spinal problem is treated.

Full understanding of just how and why these adjustments are a quick fix to frequent nosebleeds is not completely understood. It may involve the circulation to the mucus membranes of the nasal passages, through the autonomic nervous system which dilates or constricts blood vessels. Persistent nosebleeds should be brought to the attention of medical professionals right away, in some cases, epistaxis is a sign of other health issues and complications.
