Start Your Day With A Heart-Healthy Drink

By Tom Herrin

When you think about drinks that are good for your heart, you often think about red wine.  There have been numerous studies that indicate red wine can sometimes be good for your heart, but you don’t have to have alcohol to receive the benefits of Concord grapes.  Non-alcoholic grape juice can have a similar effect, and grape juice can be used as a drink or for various forms of cooking.  I drink a small glass of grape juice each morning with any vitamins and supplements I take.

What’s In It?

The most talked about things found in grape juice are antioxidants called flavonoids.  These are thought to help fight some cancers and a variety of other conditions. Of all juices, grape juice has been found to have the highest levels of flavonoids.  It is also considered a good source of Vitamins B6, C, and thiamin.  Magnesium and potassium are found in useful amounts.  These are minerals that are essential and commonly taken in supplements by many people.  Drinking grape juice also provides a good fruit to be part of a healthy diet.

What Is The Real Benefit?

One of the most recognized perks of drinking grape juice is improving the cardiovascular system.  It is known to lower the risk of the formation of blood clots, and help blood to flow more freely.  It can also prevent the oxidation of LDL, the bad cholesterol, and help prevent the buildup of harmful materials.  One study even indicated it may actually reduce cholesterol levels.  It has also been found to improve vital brain functions.  There are some indications that excessive consumption may interfere with the absorption of iron and increase chances of anemia.  As said so many times about so many things, use in moderation.

Should You Drink Up?

Grape juice is considered to be a pretty dieter-friendly drink.  This is because it is not just packed with a high amount of calories.  As I stated earlier, I drink grape juice every morning with breakfast, and I am one of those who tries to watch my weight.  Just limit yourself to one small glass.  I drink about four to six ounces.  It is a good starter for the day.  With so much evidence that it brings about results in improving health in a short period of time, it is worth a try.  Go pick up a bottle and add it to your breakfast routine or at some other time during the day.  It’s a good natural addition to your health program.
