3 Ways to Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

By Genevieve Cunningham

When it comes to eating a healthy diet, one of our greatest downfalls is sweets. They are just so mouthwatering and tempting to the taste buds. And when we’ve lived our entire lives with a sweet tooth, kicking the habit to the curb is especially tough, even when it’s in the name of better health. If you want to improve your health, but you’re not quite ready to give up your favorite desserts, check out these three quick alternatives to take to the kitchen for healthier sweets today.

Avocado Frosting

Avocado is a magical food. It’s packed full of vitamins and healthy fats, serves up a mouthwatering guacamole, and it can be mixed with other ingredients to make a healthy form of frosting. Just check out a quick internet search for avocado frosting, and you’ll find all sorts of delicious recipes that are simultaneously healthy. The only catch? It’s not exactly frosting … it won’t be quite as sweet and the texture will be slightly different. But if you’re willing to give it a try and some time, you can literally have your cake and your health at the same time.

Yogurt Cake

Yogurt cake is similar to a regular cake, but you’ll whip some of your favorite yogurt into the mix. This lowers the calorie count, gives it a lighter texture, and can even help to sweeten it. It’s not terribly different in flavor, so it’s an easy way to venture into healthier eating without too many changes to the menu or the taste buds.

Use Alternative Sugars

There are other kinds of sugar out there that the general population are either unaware of or simply don’t use. But these sugars may be healthier than regular old cane sugar, which is the norm in most parts of the country. Check out lower calorie, slightly healthier options by trying coconut oil palm sugar, date sugar, or in some cases, even fruit juice. The final result may not be quite as sweet as you’re used to, but it will be similar enough to give it a try again and get closer to a healthier diet.

When it comes to eating sweets, having your cake and eating it too is especially hard! But with some serious research and planning, it can be done. Check out these alternatives, give them a  try on your favorite sweets, and protect your health at the same time. You’ll have to keep an open mind and be willing to experiment, but you may just find that staying healthy is easier and more delicious than you ever imagined.
