Children With Otitis Media-Related Pain Find Chiropractic Relief in Porter Ranch

Could specific chiropractic therapy help relieve otitis media in young children?

A study looked at pediatric otitis media with effusion, a common and costly condition, and how chiropractic care might help relieve otitis media pain symptoms.

A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the reasonability of clinically investigating the success of chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) for pediatric patients afflicted with chronic otitis media with effusion.

This study involved 22 patients between the ages of six months and six years who were administered active chiropractic SMT or placebo chiropractic SMT. Otoscopy and tympanometry were both used to elicit a middle ear status profile in the patients, while daily diaries were gathered.

In all, five newspaper advertisements returned 105 responses over six months, with 20 patients qualifying for and being used in the study. Participant compliance with the therapy and daily diaries was positive, and there weren’t reports of side effects for either the active or placebo chiropractic therapies.

Researchers concluded that recruitment for a randomized controlled trial is reasonable and could be improved upon through proper medical input. Patients and parents are both able and wanting to participate in research that compares active SMT and placebo SMT.

Parents specifically suggested that similar life quality and functional ability techniques can be used in a more massive trial. Furthermore, objective evaluation including tympanometry and otoscopy should be undertaken by professional chiropractors.
