The Power of Pets and Why You Need a Furry Friend - 3rd Week

By Genevieve Cunningham

When we think of improving our health, we tend to think of things such as watching our diet or lifting weights or special supplements. But sometimes, it’s a lot simpler than that. Sometimes improving your health is about your surroundings. Is your home clean and free of toxins? Do you take care of yourself in terms of looks and hygiene? Are you surrounded by family and friends? These smaller aspects of health tend to go overlooked, but can actually make the largest impact. If you’d like to take advantage of some of these smaller parts of your health and wellness, it might be time to get a pet. Take a look at these three great reasons to get a pet and how it can boost your health long-term.

Because Pets are Friends

A pet can become one of your best and most loyal companions. And in today’s world, one in which we are more connected and yet lonelier than ever, this is a powerful benefit indeed. We need the interaction with another being. We need the touch, the laughter, the love. The power of friendship can help you stay both mentally and physically healthy. While human friends are definitely best, a sweet pet can bring you a lot of inner peace and calm and keep you positive about life.

Because Pets Give You Purpose

You have to take care of a pet. They have to be fed and bathed and cared for. While this can seem like a lot of work to the young, it’s actually a great lesson in responsibility and compassion. For the older generation, a pet is a great choice for empty nesters or those who enjoy being needed. In return, your pet will provide friendship (see above!) and unconditional love that will last a lifetime.

Because They Keep You Active

If your pet is a snake or a lizard, this might not work. But, if you have a dog or cat or another furrier version, then your pet will likely need attention and play time. Dogs are great for keeping you active, as they need physical activity such as games, fetch, or long walks. Staying active is a great way to stay healthy, maintain a proper weight, and keep your quality of life bright and positive.

It doesn’t matter which pet you choose or what it looks like. Each pet is distinct and individual, just like the rest of us. Choose an animal that speaks to you, one that fits into your lifestyle, and one that makes you feel good about life. If you really want to improve your health, look no farther than your local animal shelter for a boost in health and a whole lot of love.
