3 Hobbies That Might Be Harming Your Spine

By Genevieve Cunningham

Having hobbies is an excellent way to stay mentally and physically healthy. We need hobbies and personal interests in our lives. We need to connect and learn and push ourselves to new heights. But, what happens when one of your favorite activities physically hurts you, or practicing your favorite hobby causes back pain or a stiff neck? If you’ve noticed a little soreness after spending time with your favorite activity, check out these three hobbies that might be killing your spine, followed by what you can do about it.

Gardening

A nice yard is appealing to the eye, says something about our own expectations, and can be a ton of fun to work on. But, the constant stooping, bending, twisting, and turning can also cause significant back pain. Should you give it up? No! But it might be a good idea to look into back supports and also to practice good lifting habits by using your legs instead of the back.

Video Games

The video game craze is unlikely to go away anytime soon. Too many people love to grab the controller and spend all day on the couch. But, this hobby is causing pain in the back, neck, and even the hands. Should you give it up? You don’t have to, but it won’t hurt to quell your game time just a bit. It can also help to take frequent breaks and even buy active video games that require constant movement.

Netflix

OK, so this didn’t start out as a hobby, but it’s done so frequently, it can probably be classified under the same category. Who doesn’t love a good Netflix binge session? Even though we all do it from time to time, it’s not good for your back. Instead of spending one hour watching your favorite show, we now spend five, six, and upwards of hours catching up on past seasons. Our bodies weren’t really made to lie in the bed all day and night doing absolutely nothing. Should you give it up? You’re probably not going to (me either!), but you might space out your episodes a bit or try doing exercise while you watch last season’s cliffhanger.
