What to Look for When Finding the Right Doctor

No one particularly enjoys going to the doctor, but the truth is, it is a part of life. Whether you are in pain or need health advice, your doctor can be a great aid. However, not all doctors are created equally, as you may have already experienced. In fact, the wrong doctor can lead to more health problems and a lot of stress. Spend some time finding the best doctor for you, and you will know your health and well being are in good hands for many years to come. Here are some tips on picking the best doctor:

  1. Compassionate: Doctors see a lot of patients every day, which can tend to wear on many of them. If your doctor is blunt and unsympathetic to your needs or your pain, then he is not the right doctor for you. However, do know that your doctor is not there to baby you either. He should listen to your concerns with care and help you find relief in your issue. Many studies have found that patients who trusted their doctor ended up getting better quicker.
  2. Knowledge: You can’t expect your general physician to know everything there is to know about sicknesses and ailments, but they should be very knowledgeable. Look for doctors who are continually learning and staying up to date with the newest information and technology. You should be able to trust your doctor when he shares advice.
  3. Gender and Age: In general, it is not good to stereotype people. However, when it comes to our doctors, we have to pick someone who will make us feel comfortable. This could mean that you feel more comfortable with a woman doctor over a male, or perhaps a middle-aged doctor over an older or younger doctor. You want to pick the doctor that you feel comfortable opening up to because that is how you will stay healthiest. You don’t want to hold back embarrassing problems because they could be a sign of something bigger.
  4. Open Minded: If a doctor is well trained and educated, then he knows that there are alternative treatments out there that should be tried before surgery and medications. The best doctor will want you to have the best health, even if it means he refers you to another doctor or specialist. If you come to your doctor with back pain, he should ask if you have tried natural or alternative care first before wheeling you into the X-ray room.

Finding the perfect doctor for you and your health issues can be tough. Don’t settle on a mediocre doctor. Of course, our expectations of our doctors should be realistic, but it is fair to desire and pursue a doctor who cares more about his patients than his paycheck.

While these tips are practical for finding a primary care doctor, they can also be used to find the right chiropractor for your back. You want to find a chiropractor who you feel comfortable with, is compassionate with your issues, and is up to date in his knowledge of chiropractic care and complementary treatments.
