Chiropractic Management Works With Women in Whittier

Could chiropractic care provide personal relief for women with fibromyalgia?

A study looked at resistance training (RES) paired with chiropractic treatment for the improvement of fibromyalgia (FM) symptoms and hopeful resolution for women with this disorder.
The study served as a randomized control trial using two groups: a RES group was tested at a university, while specific chiropractic therapy was administered at chiropractic clinics. Both groups finished 16 full weeks of RES involving 10 exercises done twice each week. Patients at the chiropractic clinic were given RES along with chiropractic therapy during these biweekly therapy sessions.

Patient strength was evaluated using a one-repetition maximum for both the chest press and the leg extension exercise. Using the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire, along with obtaining patients’ myalgic scores and their active tender point numbers, researchers assessed patient functionality through the Continuous Scale Physical Functional Performance test. Examinations of variance that had continued throughout the study compared groups both prior to and following therapy.

Six of the women discontinued the study, with total adherence to training being significantly greater among patients in the RES combined with chiropractic treatment group. Both groups showed improvement in their body strength. Interestingly, improvements were seen in both groups even though there weren’t group interactions permitted. Though all patients showed greater strength by study’s end, only patients in the chiropractic-included group showed significant improvement in balance, flexibility, coordination, and endurance between pre- and post-analyses.

In conclusion, women with FM experienced significant improvement in both strength and general functionality by study’s end; the inclusion of chiropractic treatment raised adherence rates (and dropped dropout rates) and ultimately led to greater improvements of general functionality.
