The Weekend: Prime Time For Lower Back Injuries

The weekend is a time when many sedentary, modern office workers spend a lot of time away from their computer desks and up on their feet, performing some form of physical exercise. Whether its yard work, enjoying the outdoors with hiking, or playing some pick up basketball at the local YMCA, these unconditioned bodies are suddenly exposed to the stress of intense physical activity, and run the serious risk of back injury.

Chiropractors know that statistically, the weekends are a dangerous time for people’s backs. By Monday these weekend warriors are back at the office in pain, popping pain killers by the hour, and lamenting their aging bodies. But it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s just these sort of situations that can benefit from weekly chiropractic care, which helps people avoid to avoid creating chronic lower back, addiction to pain meds, and general dysfunction.

Chiropractic care offers drug-free, non-invasive therapy that can aid patients to a speedy recovery from weekend back injuries. One technique to accomplish this is known as spinal decompression, which is highly effective in treating bulging, slipped, and herniated discs. This involves strapping the patient to a special spinal decompression table that begins to gently stretch out the spine in order to ease pressure on the the discs between vertebrae so that they stop squeezing nerve endings, which is the cause of back pain. By stretching out the spine, the spinal decompression table allows blood to circulate throughout the tight areas the were formerly so jammed up that little blood flow could reach them. This ensures faster healing of these shock absorbing discs, and faster recovery for the patients.

Another effective chiropractic technique for treating lower back pain is spinal adjustment. The idea behind the treatment is that people develop misalignments in the vertebrae that make up the spine, called subluxations. Sudden unusual exertion can exacerbate these misalignments and pinch the nerves that radiate from the spine or cause more pressure on the soft discs between vertebrae. The therapy involves the chiropractor using his hands to push the body at particular angles which correct the misalignments to relieve the pressure on nerves and discs, resulting in a clearing up of the pain.

If a back injury does occur, time is of the essence in seeking out treatment. The longer one waits to get relief for lower back pain, the more likely that the conditions can set in and become a chronic problem. This can be avoided by getting regular chiropractic treatments, which should be seen as getting a tune up for a car. The better you treat your vehicle, the smoother it will run.
