Chiropractic After a Cesarean Section

More than one million babies are born via cesarean section (C-section) every year in the United States. That’s about one-third the total of all births and the number is growing. If you’ve had a C-section you may be experiencing aches and pains for weeks after the delivery. That’s because a cesarean section is major abdominal surgery and should be treated as such.

Unfortunately, back pain is a common side effect of C-sections. The anesthesia used to numb the area can result in a variety of side effects, including itching, numbness, tingling, shivering and back pain. Your chiropractic team knows that the beginning of your journey into motherhood shouldn’t be remembered as a time for discomfort, therefore they advise taking an active role in addressing your pain.

Feeling Better After a C-section

The most important thing that a new mom can do after a cesarean section is to remember to take care of herself. Childbirth is a time of extreme pain and birth that results in a C-section is even more so. Your chiropractor suggests the following tips to reduce your pain following cesarean section surgery:

  • Don’t be shy about taking a rest when you need one. It seems as if many women are in a race to get out of bed and moving as quickly as possible. The important thing is to listen to your body and give it what it needs.
  • Your bowel movements may not be regular for a while after you have your surgery; this is completely normal. Be sure to get plenty of fiber and drink lots of water to help you get back to your normal bowel habits.
  • Talk to your obstetrician to find out when you can begin to exercise again. It may be beneficial to take walks for a while and avoid more strenuous activities, particularly jogging or weight lifting.
  • While most new mothers are able to eat a normal diet after delivery, many women experience nausea or an upset stomach after a C-Section. If your tummy isn’t cooperating with you, try eating some bland foods that are low in fat.

Can You Receive Chiropractic Care After a C-Section?

In most cases, women who have had a cesarean section can receive chiropractic care for their back pain after birth. Speak to your chiropractor and obstetrician to find out if chiropractic care is right for you. Most women who seek out this treatment do so because it’s a safe and effective way to manage pain. There’s no need to worry about pain medications or anti-inflammatories being transferred to your child through your breast milk because chiropractors don’t use them. Instead, they rely on specialized techniques designed to deliver pressure safely and without unnecessary force.

Talk to your chiropractic team to find out if this safe and effective pain relief method is right for you. Motherhood is a hard enough job without having to cope with back pain while you do it.
