Are Your Knees Talking to You?

By Sandy Schroeder

In the morning, you may feel a painful twinge, or hear a click, as if your knees were talking to you. Heeding those early warning signals could make a big difference to keep your knees working smoothly for you.

The knee is one of the most intricate parts of the body, and it is totally dependent on movement to stay healthy.  Over time, knee health can change. I have two friends who ran into a great deal of knee pain. One played football and injured a knee. The other fellow injured a knee in an accident.

When wear and tear or injuries occur, arthritis can settle in and stiffness, pain and immobility can take over. The knee has no blood vessels to bring it nutrients so it is totally dependent on movement to distribute its nourishing synovial fluid to keep it healthy.

Getting Chiropractic Help

If you are having knee pain, see your local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic, and find out where you stand. The Joint’s staff of licensed chiropractors will seek to help you retain your mobility and lessen your pain.

When you come in, your chiropractor will explain how a healthy spine can help your whole body thrive. Together, the two of you can put together a plan, seeking to reduce pain and improve movement.

Healthy Ways to Go

Activate - Staying active to keep the knee moving with doctor-approved gentle exercises, such as water therapy, or the gentle movements of tai chi is a good first step. Remembering to move as much as possible will help. Instead of settling in on the couch, make time to get outside, visit friends, or work in your garden. If it works for you, start doing short morning walks.

Lighten Up – Weight is a serious issue. When you lose one pound of weight, you subtract four pounds of stress from your knee. Just five pounds lost adds up to 20 pounds less stress on your knee. To help your knees before they become  painful, weight loss may be the best choice you could make. Over time, extra weight impacts the knee cartilage that acts as a shock absorber. The more cartilage that is lost, the more you risk developing osteoarthritis with its intense bone-on-bone knee pain.

Both of my friends stayed active and lost weight to reduce their pain. But they both agreed: The earlier knee pain is addressed, the better.
