The Harsh Truths of Long-Term Weight Loss

By Genevieve Cunningham

Losing weight is a tough job. If it were as easy as putting on weight, we’d all look like supermodels. But the challenge of taking off excess weight is real and, far too often, it’s also discouraging. The truth is that losing weight takes some serious dedication and commitment to your goals. We all like to make excuses for why the weight won’t come off. In some instances, such as illness or imbalances or other medical conditions, those excuses are valid. But far more often, the excuses simply get in the way of progress. If you’re ready to finally drop a few pounds and get your body in shape, take a look at these harsh truths about setting out on a fitness journey.

It’s Probably Your Diet

No one really wants to hear this, but it is true in most cases. Losing weight has far more to do with your diet than your workout. Though a good exercise routine is helpful, you can’t "out-exercise" a bad diet. If you want your weight loss success to last, adjusting your diet over time to make it healthier will be your best chance.

Self Control is Necessary

You probably shouldn’t eat the cookie. It can be really hard, especially around holidays or celebrations, to say no to those delicious indulgences. But if you’re in it for the long haul, you simply must learn some self control. If you can get your cravings under control long-term, then you’ll be able to reintroduce the occasional treat. But for now, learn and practice your self control as much as possible.

There is No Quick Fix

Everyone wants that magic pill or food that will shed the pounds and show off their abs in a week. Unfortunately, that magic fix does not exist. It takes time to put the weight on, and it will probably take even longer to take the weight off. You absolutely cannot go into your journey expecting a quick and easy fix. Instead, go in with the mindset that this is a lifestyle change that will take massive amounts of time and effort, but the long-term effects will be more than worth it.

Losing weight really is tough, which is why so many of us give up before we’ve really even begun. Instead of giving up, be real and honest with yourself. Learn the truth, use it to your advantage, and work toward better health and the body of your dreams every single day.
