Our Productivity Can Be Directly Affected By Our Mood

By Tom Herrin

We all know something about moods.  It is one of those things that if your mom is in a bad one, you had better learn how to keep a low profile.  Our workplace can be the same way.  You try to stay out of the way of another worker who is in a bad mood.  It has been shown that people in bad moods will have lower productivity.  It can also lead to more accidents.  Bad moods can wreak havoc on an office or any other place where a harmonious work relationship is needed.  Can you imagine trying to solve a difficult problem in a highly technical field when one of the team members is in a bad mood?  The problem will not be solved nearly as efficiently.  There could even be disastrous results.

Work Environment Can Help With Good Moods

There are a lot of variables that can add to the atmosphere to create a better mood for everyone.  Music can inspire or stimulate many people.  Living things like plants or fish can serve to make some people feel upbeat and in tune with nature.  Using scents in offices to create a more pleasant atmosphere has become increasingly popular in today’s offices.  Simple rewards are seen in many work quarters, as evidenced by special parking spaces or pictures posted in prominent places in offices that give recognition for outstanding workers.

The Social Connection

More employers are realizing the benefits of encouraging interaction among workers as an extension of the work environment.  The company bowling teams of old have been replaced by a variety of activities, from other sports to entertainment.  Workers who have good interactions among themselves tend to be in better moods and share more concern for each other.  The bottom line is more productivity for the company.  The employees enjoy better working relationships which may carry over to home.

Overall Health May Improve As Well

Many companies offer some kind of exercise programs or incentives.  Some offer memberships to health clubs.  Healthier workers are more motivated and also make fewer demands on the company health insurance program.  It is another win-win situation for all.  I once had a supervisor tell me he didn’t care if the teachers were happy.  I told him if the teachers were unhappy, that was going to be passed on to the kids.  I was the principal.  Everybody’s productivity is affected by moods; let's us try our best to keep people in good ones.
