New Food Trends for 2017

By Debra Rodzinak

With so many interesting food trends in the past year such as avocado, sweet potatoes, and smoothies of every shape and form, it seems like there could be nothing left to wow the average consumer over the next 12 months.  This couldn’t be further from the truth.  Some of the food “stars” sure to make an appearance in 2017 include:

Ugly Produce

Ugly produce is exactly what it sounds like ... ugly.  Produce that isn’t perfect and have, in the past, gone straight into the garbage bin are now the star of the show.  With food waste a growing problem, many consumers are well aware of the impact their food choices have on the planet.  Look for ugly produce at your local farmer’s market and health food stores.

Stem to Root Cooking

With the continuing trend of food waste prevention, using every part of fruits and vegetables is going to become popular.  From chefs to home cooks alike, look for inventive ways that cooks will incorporate stems from carrots and beets or broccoli stalks into their meals.  Food byproducts are bound to make an appearance, too.  Chickpea juice or whey that is leftover from yogurt are two examples.

Seaweed and Other Greens

Anyone who loves sushi is familiar with seaweed’s texture and taste, but items such as seaweed chips, kelp, and other “umami” flavored items are converging onto shelves in the coming year.  Chefs can use these flavors in soups, sauces, oils, and salts.

Golden Lattes

Made with coconut oil, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper, honey, and plant-based milk, the golden latte is poised to become a huge trend.  The appeal of using turmeric in a latte is the anti-inflammatory properties it contains.

Veggie Burgers

Gone are the days of eating a veggie burger that tastes like mush.  Many supermarkets and fast food restaurants are changing their vegetarian menus to include a burger that could pass for one made with meat.  Can’t find them in your local health foods store?  Look in the meat bin next to the ground chuck.

Other Vegetarian Foods

With an uptick in vegetarian cuisine, even those who are not strict vegetarians are opting for a vegetarian meal when they eat out.  With chefs taking vegetarian food up a notch, consumers can have dishes such as fry bread or vegan chocolate chip cookies and come back wanting more.

Dinner Meal Kits

There is no need to search for food items or spices to create the perfect meal.  Meal kits are growing in popularity; with everything you need to create a tasty, healthy meal all in one box, this easy prep-and-fix meal idea is sure to gain steam.  Many grocery stores are beginning to carry these all-in-one meal boxes on their shelves.

No matter what you decide to try, try something new this year and let your palate explore the endless possibilities of healthy eating.  You may surprise yourself with what you find.
