The Health Benefits of Baking Soda

By Sara Butler

Baking soda is present in most homes, but you probably use it as a way to control odors in your refrigerator rather than as a health remedy. It turns out baking soda is good for many different things and can be used in many different ways. Here are a few of the health benefits of baking soda you may want to make a part of your routine!

Treat Insect Bites and Poison Ivy

One of the perils of the outdoors is bugs and poison ivy, but you can easily treat these ailments with baking soda. If you brush up against a patch of poison ivy when you’re in the woods or you get stung by a bee, you can make a paste out of baking soda and water to apply to the affected area. The baking soda neutralizes bee venom and toxins on the skin. You can use it on wasp and hornet stings as well as red ant bites. If you’re in a pinch, you don’t even have to make a paste, you can just apply the powder directly to your skin. So, don’t forget to add a box of baking soda on your next camping trip!

Clean Your Hands

Your hands touch a lot of things over the course of a day and just thinking about how many times you touch your food or your face with dirty hands is downright disturbing. Forget those expensive hand sanitizers (that are bad for you anyway) and go with baking soda! You can reduce the spread of illness and keep your paws clean by creating a paste out of baking soda. Just use one part water to three parts baking soda and rub it over your hands vigorously; it will sanitize and remove dirt – and maybe even leave your hands feeling fresh too.

Treat a Sunburn

Few things are worse than a painful sunburn. If you find yourself suffering from a severe sunburn and are in a lot of pain, you have to take steps to help your skin heal. Try adding a half cup of baking soda to a bathtub full of warm water and soak for 15 minutes. Don’t use a towel to dry off when you get out, but instead allow your skin to air dry – so make sure you’re not expecting company. The baking soda works to help your skin heal and reduces the stinging and burning sensation you may be experiencing. Hopefully, you’ll heal fast with this treatment!
