How to Prevent Winter Injuries

By Sara Butler

Winter isn't coming, it is here. Anyone stuck in a blizzard knows that. Some people love this time of year, and you have to admit it has its own special charm. Few things are as lovely as a blanket of freshly fallen snow. But along with snow comes the ice and slippery sidewalks and roads. Here are some safety tips from The Joint to help you avoid injury!

Winter Injuries

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that falls are the leading cause of winter injury, sending almost 9 million people to the emergency room every year. You can avoid being a part of these statistics by taking some of the following safety precautions.

  • Salt or sand slippery surfaces – Your driveway, sidewalk, and steps should all be sanded or salted at night and in the morning. The night treatment can help you avoid an early morning fall when you’re rushing out of your house to get to work.
  • Get a grip – Shoes are always important, but in the winter they’re even more important to save you from injury. Wear shoes with soles that have a good grip so you can avoid the slip.
  • Drive carefully – You need to be cautious when you drive, especially in the morning and evening after the sun has gone down. These are times when it’s more likely there will be ice on the roads. So take your time – it’s worth your health!
  • Bundle up – If you work outside, then this time of the year you need to layer. This is really important when it comes to your socks, too. If your feet are too numb from the cold, then you risk falling because you can’t feel them while trying to navigate slippery surfaces safely. Make sure you take breaks too, so you can warm up and stretch to avoid frostbite and muscle strain.

What Else?

Winter can be a time for fun, but it can also be quite the annoyance. You have to be patient and make sure you take your time to avoid injury this time of the year. If you do slip and fall, you need to make sure to see your chiropractor. Even if you don’t feel you injured yourself, it’s still a good idea to get checked out and make sure everything is in alignment so other problems don’t pop up down the line.

Stay safe this winter and have fun – and don’t forget to come into The Joint Chiropractic for your regular adjustments!
