3 Things Your Doctor Isn't Saying (But Thinking!)

By Genevieve Cunningham

Sometimes we forget that doctors are real people with real thoughts. We think of them as a bit of a machine, seeing patients, spitting out prescriptions, and making people healthy. And while they do all of these things, they do it in a more human way. Sometimes your doctor wants to talk to you … person to person … and tell you a few things about your health. But their professionalism and manners prevent them from doing so. If you’ve ever watched your doctor and wondered what they’re really thinking, take a look at these common thoughts that they keep to themselves, but would really like to tell you for your own good.

Your Weight is a Bigger Problem Than You Think

Doctors aren’t going to berate you for poor decisions. That’s not their job and they don’t want to do it. But they probably are saying things that you’re not hearing, especially when it comes to your weight. If they say that you might want to drop a few pounds, think of it as necessary. Excess weight can cause an increased risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, joint discomfort, and so many other ailments. Doctors want you to be fit and trim, so take their gentle encouragements as forceful nudges, and get busy!

I Can Tell You’re Not Following Doctor’s Orders

If you’ve been given specific instructions to follow in order to get rid of a particular ailment, your doctor needs you to follow them. And if you haven’t been, your doctor can probably tell. That’s why it’s so important to be honest with your doctor. If something isn’t working, they need to know whether that’s because the tool is ineffective or because you’re not using the tool as prescribed. Bottom line: Follow your doctor’s orders if you want to get better.

I Know What I’m Talking About

Before the internet, people trusted their doctors a lot more. But now everyone thinks they’re a doctor. When you come in with an ailment, and you’ve already self-diagnosed yourself, your doctor really wants to point to that hard-earned degree on the wall. Their years of school and experience trump your 30-minute Google search every time. You go to the doctor for a reason, so leave your Dr. House skills behind and let the doctor do their job.

Doctors are absolutely irreplaceable in our lives. We need them, doctors of all kinds, in order to help us stay well. Just don’t forget that doctors are also people, and they know more than they let on. Find a doctor you can trust, and let them do their best at keeping you healthy and strong for a lifetime.
