Health and Wellness Promotion for Government Agencies

Health and wellness is important for every individual no matter the socioeconomic status, professional role, geographic location, or any other defining characteristic that may set individuals apart. From individuals that are ingrained in the community, to business owners to even people in positions of power, it is crucial to institute policies and formulate initiatives to promote health and wellness throughout the community.

When we think of health and wellness, there is often a community connotation affiliated with the concept. However, even the people who are in a position to make and enforce policy, specifically in the government, should be afforded the opportunity to look out for their own health and wellness. Sure the government itself is responsible for constructing a health and wellness structure for policymakers and other officials of the like, just as it is responsible for developing policies for its constituents. But different departments within the overarching government play different roles in promoting health and wellness for themselves.

According to the United States government’s Office of Personnel Management, there are certain areas of health and wellness that are being promoted and upheld more so than others throughout the government. Recently, the release of an overall assessment of the government’s health and wellness status for the year 2014 has given us great insight into how the government is operating when it comes to the health and wellness of its employees.

Using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Worksite Score Card, the 2014 assessment reviewed 291 different work sites at 36 different federal agencies, to get an idea of how health and wellness was being promoted and how standards of health and wellness are being upheld.

In some areas, like healthy eating for example, the outcomes left something to be desired. Areas like vaccinations and tobacco policies were actually held to high standards, and outcomes were definitely on par with what they should be.

The government will always be tasked with finding ways to improve the health and wellness of the people they govern. But as time passes, we need to find ways to maintain and improve the health and wellness of those who are employed by the government as well. After all, they deserve to be taken care of like everyone else - it is imperative that all Americans are able to promote personal wellness.
