Reasons Why You Should Start Eating Turmeric

In the past, I never thought about turmeric. I didn’t really cook with it much, since it doesn’t have much of a flavor, and thought of it as only a spice found in mostly Indian cuisine. Then one day I was complaining about my neck pain to my boss, and she told me how she had been taking a turmeric supplement to help with her shoulder injury. I was shocked, but intrigued and decided to do some research on the root.

It turns out, turmeric has a ton of healing properties, and this information is not just word of mouth. There has been over six thousand peer reviewed articles on the herb, making it the most popular natural healer in all of science. It’s benefits stem from curcumin, a healing compound found in turmeric. Studies claim that the compound is even more effective than many prescription drugs. Below are a few of the ways turmeric beats out synthetic medicines, not only in effectiveness, but in lack of harmful side effects as well.

Anticoagulants

People who need to take anticoagulants such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen and Naproxen on a daily basis are usually at risk for some pretty intense side effects. They can cause bleeding, hemorrhage, back pain and difficulty breathing. Turmeric has been shown to help treat conditions like deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, without any of the scary side effects. Some studies even suggest turmeric is a more effective treatment that those over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

Anti-depressants

Until this past year, turmeric had only been shown to help with depression in lab animals. However, the journal of Phytotherapy Research recently conducted a study on 60 participants who had been officially diagnosed with major depressive disorder. The participants were put into two groups, one group was treated with curcumin and the other was treated with Prozac. The results were impressive, showing that the patients were able to tolerate the curcumin and obtain more positive results than those using the Prozac.

Anti-inflammatories

This is considered turmeric’s best attribute. The curcumin component is able to successfully control inflammation, so much so, that a the journal Oncogene published a study that named curcumin the most powerful anti-inflammatory in the world, beating out aspirin and ibuprofen. In fact, many scientists feel that turmeric’s anti-inflammatory compounds are how it is able to ward off so many other diseases, such as cancer, ulcers, high cholesterol and chronic pain.
