Tips For New Runners

If you are considering taking up running, you are already on the right track. Running is one of the best forms of cardio you can do you for your body, and also one of the toughest. Even though the rewards are worth the blisters, it is still important to know what you are getting yourself into before you begin your new jogging routine. Hopefully these words of advice will help you sprint past the pain and tread successfully into your new life of running.

First off, know that no other run will be as hard as your first. It only gets better from there, even though in that moment you might want to throw in the towel. The more you hit the pavement, the stronger you will get and the easier your runs will become. However, don’t move too fast. Start out with a mile or two, and don’t increase until that amount feels like a breeze. This slow progression will prevent injury as well as increase mental stability.

One of the best perks about running is that it is essentially free. The sidewalks are your gym and the only gear required are your sneakers. Since your shoes are your only asset, it is important to buy a good pair. A cheap pair of running shoes will not only put you at risk of injury, but they could drag down your performance. Go to a store where the employees can help you pick out a pair that specifically work for you. Getting the perfect shoe can turn an average run into an amazing exercise.

Apps are something I wish I had when I started running. I used to have to track my routes using an online map, or sometimes even using my car to figure out how many miles I was trekking. However, now that there are apps for everything, running applications can track literally every aspect of your workout. Not only can you plan your jogging route, but you can keep track of your calories burned, your heart rate, your pace and compare one run to the next. Having such a hold on your running routine not only keeps you monitoring your body, but it keeps your head in the game. Knowing exactly what is going on with your run can be very motivating, keeping you strong when you think you just can’t run another step.

Running isn’t for the faint of heart, but completing a run is one of the most satisfying experiences I have ever felt. It will get you in shape as well as clear your head. Keep these tips in mind when beginning your running program, and happy jogging.
