Common Problems Requiring Chiropractic

By Debra Rodzinak

Today, many people want to take a proactive stance on their healthcare. Others have abused their spine over years with poor posture. But, three common problems chiropractors report seeing over and over in their offices now have scientific studies and research to back up their statement concerning the advantages of chiropractic adjustments.

Sciatica

According to the European Spine Journal, there was a 72 percent success rate with chiropractic care for patients who had symptoms related to sciatica. When compared to physical therapy measures, only 20 percent reported success. Those who received corticosteroid injections saw a 50 percent success rate.

Lower Back and Neck Pain

In 2003, the British Medical Journal published a study that followed 183 patients with neck pain for a full year. During this time, patients were chosen to receive treatment in one of three different groups: Manual therapy (chiropractor care), physiotherapy (exercise), and general practitioner care (local doctor).

The patients that had manual therapy recovered faster than the other two groups. In addition, the costs of practitioner care and physiotherapy were at least twice as expensive as chiropractic care.

An additional study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics discovered that patients who were treated by chiropractors for lower back pain were more satisfied and showed greater recovery than those who visited a physician. After treatment, 56 percent of chiropractic patients reported that their lower back pain was better. In comparison, only 13 percent of physician patients reported relief.

Headaches

Only surpassed by back pain, headaches are often treated by chiropractors. The peer-reviewed articles touting the chiropractor’s ability to prevent, cure, and ease the pain of headaches number in the hundreds.

Reported in a group trial that studied headaches and chiropractic care, researchers found that almost half of patients who were treated with chiropractic treatments saw a “significant” reduction in the amount of pain they felt.
