Does That Sweet Tooth Need A Healthy Change?

By Tom Herrin

A lot of us have cravings for something.  We all have some kind of weakness that, given the chance, just gets the best of us.  Chocolate is the culprit for many people.  Still others have that unfettered reaction to soda.  They just can’t leave it alone.  Some can’t pass the smell of fresh pastries like those donuts that smell so good, but you know are so bad.  Just about everyone has something that becomes their weakness.  It may become their biggest personal struggle.  Help is here in the form of some healthy sweets.

The Fruit Solution

Sometimes it becomes difficult to think about eating fruit if you haven’t had it in a while.  It’s just not what you had in mind.  It may be more the thought of it than actually the fruit itself.  Fresh fruit is generally sweet if it is ripe.  For the really sweet stuff though, try dried fruit.  Raisins are naturally sweet and can be found in a lot of cereals on store shelves.  Dried bananas, dates, apples, pears, etc., are really good choices.  They all have the major components of the whole fruit but with most of the moisture removed.  They are packed with fiber, which can help your digestion and avoid constipation.  Prunes are one of the prime examples.  Just about everyone recognizes them for these properties.

What Fruits Do For You

The good thing about fruit is you don’t have to do a lot of preparation to get the benefits.  Fruits are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and more just as they are.  We always gave kids orange slices at breaks during soccer games.  They can provide a quick energy boost.  Fruits can help improve immunities and fight some cancers.  I already mentioned fiber.  Most fresh fruits have a high water content which can replace fluids while satisfying that desire for sweets.

Swap the Good for the Bad

I know that many of us get that urge to eat some kind of candy or pastries.  Trying fruits will give you a new outlook.  Replace your junk foods with fruits for just a short period of time, and you will notice the difference in the way you feel.  Go ahead.  It’s fine to satisfy that urge for sweets.  Just try the healthier choice.  Go check out the produce section of your local market.  I assure you there will be a sweet treat that catches your eye.
