Tricking Yourself into Eating Cleaner

By Debra Rodzinak

I have an addiction. Sugar. I have dealt with this addiction for a long time. I call it an addiction because I cannot stop eating something sweet if it is out on the counter. After talking with my friends, I find that I am not alone. This has led me to do some sneaky things into fooling myself to cleaner and healthier eating.

Keep Healthy Snacks Close By

It is just as easy to eat a carrot as it is a cookie. So why do we opt for the cookie when we know it is not good for us?  Convenience. If you want to eat cleaner, have healthy foods within arms' reach. Put fresh fruit in a bowl on the counter and hide the cookies deep in the pantry. Pre-measure almonds in a snack bag to limit the amount of these healthy nuts you eat.

Place Healthy Snacks on Eye Level

We tend to grab what is at eye level. Marketers have used this knowledge for years by placing children’s cereal at child eye level in the grocery store. When unpacking from the grocery store, place all of your nutrient-rich foods at eye level in the pantry.  Place yogurt, salad, and fresh sliced fruit and veggies at eye level in the refrigerator. Put unhealthy foods like cake and pizza in opaque containers so they cannot be readily seen.

Keep the Dinner Table Clear

When sitting down to dinner, keep the food in the kitchen, fill your plate, and sit down to eat. When food is not sitting directly on the table, getting up for seconds forces you to pause for a moment and think about what you are doing. It is very easy to take a “little more” when the bowl is directly in front of you. If you take a spoonful more two or three times in a meal, those calories can quickly add up.

Eat Your Vegetables

Eat your vegetables first at a meal. Also, have a “make your own” food station where produce is placed first. Studies performed by the University of Copenhagen found that people tend to eat the same amount of food. But, when there are more vegetables consumed, the meal is overall lower in calories and healthier.

Freeze Sweets

People are able to savor a sweet snack more when it is frozen. Fruit, chocolate, or even a candy bar takes longer to eat when frozen. Also, when one has to wait for a cupcake to thaw before eating it, the cravings many times will pass.

Overall, you can eat cleaner and cut calories by trying just a few of these tricks, and you will be eating healthier in no time.
