Chiropractic: The Road to Better Health

By Krista Elliott

I've done a lot of driving lately. From taking the kids to swim practice, to visiting my mom, to client meetings, a lot of my time has been spent on the road. And I'm certainly not alone in this: The average commute travel time in America is 25.4 minutes each way, with some poor slobs spending over six hours a week on their commute.

All of this rushing around from Point A to Point B got me thinking about chiropractic care, and how there are parallels between our daily commute and our central nervous system.

Bear with me, here.

Time to Head Back to Math Class, Kids!

OK, so do you remember way back in math class when you learned that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line? No? Well, you probably would have learned it if you'd been paying attention and not distracted by Shawn and Darlene, the long-term couple who spent math class either bickering or making up.

The principle makes sense, though, particularly when it comes to driving (and chiropractic care -- don't worry, we'll get to that). When you're driving on the freeway and you have to go around a curve, you have to slow down a bit. Whereas if the freeway is straight and wide-open, it's a much smoother drive, and you can maintain a consistent speed.

Now, imagine if you were driving smoothly along, when all of a sudden you came upon a section of the road that was out of alignment with the rest of the road, even just by a bit. You'd likely brake, and steer through it, but it would slow you down considerably to have to deal with that break in the path.

Well, it's pretty much the same when it comes to your spine (See? I told you I was getting around to that!)

The Original Information Superhighway

In order for your body to function, your brain has to send messages down your spinal cord and the rest of your nervous system ("Touch the stove." "Put the food on the fork into your mouth." "Ring the doorbell."). As well, messages from those nerves have to make their way up to your brain ("That's hot." "That tastes sweet." "A dog is barking.").

In order for those messages to send and receive easily and smoothly, there must be an unimpeded path down the spine. But, that isn't always the case. If the spine itself has subluxations (misaligned areas) due to injury or poor biomechanics, it's akin to our out-of-alignment section of road. Information can get past, but not as efficiently. And in the meantime, there's going to be a lot of grumbling from your body's pain centers.

Chiropractic care from the experts at The Joint Chiropractic works like a highly skilled road crew, putting things back into alignment so that the freeway can flow smoothly. Drug-free, non-invasive, and safe, chiropractic care is excellent at relieving back pain and restoring optimal function to the body's nervous system.
