Equipment to Make Your Workout Really Work - 2nd Week

By Genevieve Cunningham

So you’ve decided to start working out. That’s great! For many people that means dropping hundreds of dollars at the gym, buying new workout clothes and shoes, and stocking up on supplements. But, is all of that really necessary? Do you really have to break the bank just to get in a good, solid workout? Not really. If you want to begin working out or simply take your current workout to a new level, check out these three pieces of equipment to own for yourself.

Resistance Bands

These are great for multiple reasons. For starters, they are incredibly cheap and incredibly small, so they can fit into the tightest budgets and the smallest spaces. They’re also very versatile. You can use resistance bands to work the arms, legs, even the back. They come in varying intensities as well, so start with something light and move on to the extra heavy version. Need some ideas? Check out this video of a resistance band workout.

Medicine Ball

A medicine ball resembles a basketball, but it is much heavier. They come in different weights, so you can challenge yourself as you get better. Medicine balls are great for throwing (with a partner to catch it!), challenge you with crunches and sit-ups, and help to work the arms as well. They can also be placed between your lower back and a wall while you hold yourself in a sitting position. These can normally be found at sporting goods stores or sometimes at your local all-purpose store.

Dumbbells

These are easy to find, easy to use, and great for toning the muscles and boosting general strength. Use them as regular weights, or simply hold them while you walk or do another form of cardio. Just don’t do too much too fast or you’ll burn yourself out. Start with very light weights, and climb to heavier weights as you get more fit and capable in your workout.

If you want to take your workout up a notch, these pieces of equipment may be all it takes to help you do it. Some small changes can make a big difference, so give these a try before doing anything expensive and drastic. With some simple accessories, a little planning and research, and a positive attitude, you can get an incredible workout and push yourself that much closer to the body of your dreams and health to last a lifetime.
