Chiropractic Care for August Auto Accidents

According to the Florida State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), August is by far the most dangerous month as far as automobile accidents are concerned. Specifically, the Florida DMV reported 197,214 injuries and 2,563 fatalities in the year 2009 alone while data is still being collected, it is estimated that these numbers have risen in each year since 2009.

While this is just one state’s data, we can use Florida as a case study as to how dangerous the roads can be in August, when summer time travel is at its highest throughout the year. When there are more people on the road, there is a natural inclination for there to be more automobile accidents. Combined with aggressive drivers who are trying to get to their destination as fast as possible and vehicles that are hauling things like boats and RV’s, the situation can become grave for those on the road during August.

Automobile accidents present significant danger to our musculoskeletal health. If an accident is serious enough, then it can result in broken bones, torn ligaments, or in some cases, mortality. However automobile accidents do not have to be that significant to cause injury and decrease musculoskeletal health status. Even collisions of speeds as slow as five miles per hour can result in injury, leading to a lower quality of life and the need for treatment.

When a collision occurs, the force of the impact usually sends our bodies in different directions causing our heads to flail back and forth or to the side. This occurrence is known as whiplash. When someone involved in a car accident is faced with whiplash, the bones in the neck and cervical spine along with the nerves that line this extremely sensitive area are compromised, leaving the spine out of position and the nerves inhibited. This contributes to intense pain, dizziness, lack of range of motion in the neck, and many other harmful symptoms.

Chiropractic care has been known to mediate the effects of whiplash in many scenarios. After an automobile accident, a chiropractor can determine how the accident altered the structure of the spine and find ways to correct the spine’s alignment. When the spine is put back in place, the nerves are firing correctly and order is restored.

We are always encouraged to be as safe as possible when we are on the road but sometimes, automobile accidents are out of our control. If an accident occurs followed by injuries like whiplash and anything else that accompanies the aftermath of an automobile accident, consider chiropractic care before pharmaceutical medications or surgery.
