How to Walk Your Way to Health

Staying active is hard to do. Between the busyness of work and life, finding extra time to spend at the gym can be tricky (sometimes impossible, even). But this doesn't mean that you should let all of your fitness goals go out the window; walking can be a perfect way to stay in shape while also getting where you need to go.

The National Institute of Health recommends that you take at least 10,000 steps per day in order to maintain an activity level that will help to properly manage your weight and improve your cardiovascular health. While it may sound like a lot of steps to take each day, with a few easy tweaks in your daily schedule, it’s actually totally manageable. Here are a few ways to integrate 10,000 steps into your busy day-to-day life:

#1: Morning (1,100 Steps):

If you live within walking distance to work, this is the perfect opportunity to start taking advantage of that. Wake up a few minutes early, and throw your work shoes into your purse or briefcase (you’ll want to wear good walking shoes until you get to work). If you don’t live close enough to walk, consider hopping off the bus or train (if public transportation is your thing) a few stops early and walk the rest of the way. If you drive, park a few blocks away from your office.

#2: Afternoon (4,500 steps):

Just because you are at work does not mean that you can’t be moving. On your lunch break, take advantage of the free time and get out from behind your desk. Take a brisk walk to go grab a bite to eat, or just take a couple of laps around the block. Also, throughout your work day, make sure that you are taking regular breaks and getting up. Take a few laps around the office. Grab some water or coffee. Hit the bathroom. Need to have a work-related conversation with someone? Consider a good, old-fashioned walk-and-talk.

#3: Evening (4,500 steps):

First, when you’re leaving for the day, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Also, similarly to your morning route, get in some good walking on your way home. Do you have a dog? This is probably a great time to take him or her out for a walk. Also, if you need to get any errands done (food shopping, etc.), don’t wait for a prime parking spot. Instead, park in one of the remote spots that will force you to walk a bit further.
