How to Prevent the Holiday Bulge

By Genevieve Cunningham

Packing on pounds during the holidays is so common, it’s basically expected of everyone. We tend to overindulge on all of the goodies, and even though our taste buds appreciate the break, our waistlines pay the price. But even though the majority will leave the season a little heavier than they went into it, is it absolutely necessary to gain weight? Or is this an expectation that you can actually do without? Take a look at these tips for preventing the seemingly inevitable and leaving the holiday season healthier than ever.

Drink First

OK, first let’s be clear. This does not mean to grab your mixed drink and guzzle away. As much as we all love a little holiday alcohol, this is specifically referring to water. Before you sit down to eat, just drink a full glass of water. This way, even if the food looks amazing, you’ll find yourself growing full and unable to overindulge. You can also drink a glass during dinner, and another before you even step foot into the room with the desserts. Even if you feel bloated, remember that water has zero calories, unlike that delicious piece of pie that you just saved yourself from devouring.

Take Your Time

There will be people galore to talk to during the holidays, so when it’s time to eat, take advantage of this. Make dinner the opportunity to talk and mingle, and subsequently take your precious time eating. The slower that you eat, the less you’re likely to consume. This has been proven time and again, so use the holidays to put this tried and true method to work.

Ask for Help

Sometimes all we need is a little accountability. Ask a spouse, friend, or loved one to help you stay on track. Choose someone who will help you, but not someone who will stay constantly on your case or won’t allow some wiggle room. Having someone else’s eyes on you will likely be all that you need to resist the second helping or the extra dessert. But make sure that you’re prepared to commit if you choose this method. If you’re not sure that you want to be reminded to stay away from the calories, then your helper might feel more like your enemy at the day’s end.

The best way to fight the holiday bulge is to prevent it. The less weight you gain, the less weight you have to lose when the holidays are over. Use these tips to help you stay on the right track, and enjoy the holidays sans extra weight.
