When Pinched Nerves Strike People Take Action

If you are the person with the pinched nerve, you may be on your way to, or in a chiropractor’s office right now seeking relief.

Pinched nerves don’t seem, to wait for anything or anybody. They show up with a real hit of numbness, soreness, tingling or intense pain that can pop up anywhere in the body.

Chiropractors tell us nerves can be pinched by walking, slumping on the couch or hunching over a computer screen. Nerves can also be irritated by mattresses or couches that sag, creating a lumpy sitting surface. They can be triggered by injuries and other trauma too.

The nerve that runs along the back vertebrae becomes stretched or compressed and pain takes over from there. The pain can show up in a leg as sciatic pain, or in hands, feet, neck or back.

I have a friend who has been working as a hairdresser for several years, standing on her feet for long stretches of time. Yesterday she told me the unrelenting nerve pain in her back has become the final straw. In the last few years she has had off and on neck pain too. But it went away and she went on working. Now she is considering getting out of the business and opting for an early retirement. Her customers are appalled, but the ones who have run into pinched nerves understand completely.

I have another friend who works in a busy office whipping up long drafts of material. She has always been a determined worker and could be found working away from early morning on into late afternoon. She did take breaks and ate lunch, but she spent a lot of time fixed on getting those drafts done. Now she says she has nerve pain in her neck that simply will not go away.

So how can the chiropractor help? The visit with the chiropractor will begin with a medical history and a review of what the daily schedule and leisure activities look like. There will also be some questions to see if there has been any recent trauma.

Along with the review the chiropractor can do spinal adjustments. These may provide immediate relief reducing nerve constriction and relaxing tight muscles.

Together you can map out a plan that may require more treatment sessions and involve massage or strengthening and posture exercises.
