3 Natural Remedies For a Headache

There is little worse than a nagging headache. They are draining. They are painful. And, oftentimes, they can leave you feeling especially distracted from your otherwise productive day. So I don't think that I'm alone in wanting to find a quick, easy headache remedy that doesn't necessarily involve medication (as convenient as they may be). Do you have one that works for you? Here are a few that we've come up with, that may work for you the next time a headache strikes:

Remedy #1: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Nothing can bring on a headache quite like dehydration. Dehydration headaches are generally characterized by the fact that any sort of movement can seemingly aggravate them (walking, bending over, climbing stairs, etc.). Our brains our comprised of roughy 80% water and when you are dehydrated, your brain actually shrinks (scary, right?), triggering your pain receptors. You can avoid or remedy these headaches by making sure that you are drinking a sufficient amount of fluids each day. You should aim to drink 64 ounces (eight, eight-ounce glasses) of water each day to make sure you stay adequately hydrated, and headache-free.

Remedy #2: Watch what you are eating.

Because certain foods are known to cause headaches, being wary of what it is that you eat on a daily basis can potentially greatly reduce the frequency of your headaches. Certain food triggers include dairy, avocado, meats with nitrates (bacon, salami, etc.), chocolate, banana, and peanut butter. A good way to know what your own personal trigger foods are is to keep a food journal. Write down what you eat, how much, and when, and then also record if and when you get a headache. That way, you can start to draw correlations between foods that you are eating and when you are coming down with headaches.

Remedy #3: Consider chiropractic care.

While most people consider chiropractic care to remedy muscular and joint pain, periodic chiropractic adjustments are actually a very effective remedy for chronic headaches. In fact, research has shown that the common types of headaches that people experience can be relieved with spinal manipulation. Nerve problems that can cause headaches can be spinal subluxations from a Doctor of Chiropractic. If you're looking for chiropractic care for your headaches, consider stopping into your local Joint location. They offer walk-ins at an affordable price!
