Chiropractic and Hypertension

There are various components to cardiovascular health. Our diet, our level of physical activity, our genetic layout, and our overall body composition all play a role in the health of our heart, our arteries, our veins, and all other components in the circulatory system.

In many cases we look to blood pressure as a measuring tool for our cardiovascular health. The average blood pressure for a health adult is 120/80, the first number representing systolic blood pressure and the second number representing diastolic blood pressure. Research into the relationship between cardiovascular health and the incorporation of chiropractic care into treatment for patients with cardiovascular problems is being performed more and more. Many of the results are pointing towards a positive correlation between the two.

A study conducted by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association focused on the manipulation of the C1 vertebrae as a key factor in potentially lowering blood pressure. The patient population was composed of those with early onset high blood pressure, beginning with measurement of 139/89. With eight weeks of chiropractic care, these patients saw a significant drop in both systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. Specifically, the systolic blood pressure measurements decreased at an average of 14 mmHg, or millimeters of Mercury. The measurement of the diastolic blood pressure decreased at an average of 8 mmHg, which is a significant decrease given that this is the more telling measurement of the body’s actual blood pressure. It is important to note that no member of the patient population studied was taking any sort of pharmaceutical blood pressure medication.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, can increase the amount of tension in the neck and upper portions of the back. The C1 vertebrae is encased by tons of blood vessels and if this region of the spine is misaligned, it can lead to excessive stress on these blood vessels. Chiropractic care can put these bones in the proper location and hopefully encourage proper blood flow throughout this region.
