New Chiropractic Modality May Help Ease PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious condition that can be the result of an injury or being witness to a horrific event. Many returning veterans suffer from PTSD from their time in war zones, but PTSD sufferers may also have childhood trauma or other reasons for their condition. Chiropractic care has been shown to ease the symptoms of PTSD, which can include anxiety, panic attacks and headache. But a new modality designed specifically to ease neurological disorders may help PTSD patients ever more.

The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP) is a not-for-profit that dedicates itself to raising awareness and education about the benefits of chiropractic care. The group is excited about a new study on the efficacy of an innovative bran and vestibular rehabilitation treatment (VRT) chiropractic modality on patients who have PTSD due to combat-related brain injuries. Chiropractic neurologists, who are specialists within the chiropractic community who have additional skill in the treatment of specific brain, spine and nervous system conditions, often use VRT.

The study found that patients who underwent a two-week period of VRT had reductions in the severity of their PTSD symptoms, including anxiety and depression. Lead researchers believe that the success of the modality stems from their approach to PTSD, seeing it as a brain injury as opposed to a psychiatric disorder. This distinction is a novel idea in the treatment of PTSD and could have positive results for not just the patient but also their families and society as a whole.

It is hoped that these recent study findings will lead to further clinical trials involving VRT. Since there are many causes of PTSD, scientists would like to explore the efficacy on patients without any sort of previous traumatic brain injury. Lead study author Dr. Frederick Carrick states that these findings are substantial in the future treatment of PTSD and other conditions like it.
