Four Easy Ways to Outrun Stress

By Sandy Schroeder

None of us can just erase stress from our lives, but we can look for good ways to cope. Here are some easy ways to turn everything around, lifting the mood, and putting you back in charge.  See what you think.

Figure Out Where Your Stress Lives

Sometimes stress can be so overwhelming it feels like your whole life is upside down.  But if you really think about it, and look closer, you may see where the stress triggers lurk. It could be a certain situation, at work or home, specific people, or doubts and worries within yourself. Once you pin the sources, you can start to put everything into a better perspective. Situations can be changed, people can be confronted, or avoided, and thoughts can be addressed.

Look Into Issues You May Have

If your stress has been ongoing for some time, you may want to see a counselor or psychologist to dig deeper into the issues.  Just talking can be a help, and a counselor may also suggest additional classes such as mindfulness meditation or specific therapy groups. Whatever you do, don’t just stuff your feelings into your pocket hoping they will go away. Bring them out and find ways to deal with them.

Change Your Automatic Responses

Sometimes the urge to have a beer or order pizza becomes totally automatic when stress hits. Going for a long walk or a quick run instead can help you calm down and regroup.  Reaching out to have coffee with friends, or to help someone in trouble. can also help you regain perspective and restore your balance.

Go for the Good Moments

Making healthy food, regular sleep, and little ongoing pleasures a priority will help you retain your balance. The better you feel, the easier it will be to remain calm, and enjoy the rest of life.

It has taken me awhile to learn this, but the more special little moments you can add to your day, the less important stress will be. Savor that cup of cocoa or hot tea. Linger a bit in your hot bath. Drop back for a quiet moment to read or listen to music.  When you return to deal with problems, it's often amazing how everything may seem less stressful and more workable.

As always, if problems persist, in spite of all of your efforts, see your physician and recommended counselors to help solve the problem.
