Three Times You Should Put Your Phone Down

These days, it seems as if our cell phones are a permanent fixture in our hands. Seriously, how do we even get anything done? I'm totally guilty of this, too. I am constantly checking emails, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, the weather, the traffic, etc... It's gotten to the point where I feel legitimately stressed if my phone is not within arm's reach (and that's definitely not something that I'm proud of). While this age of technology that we find ourselves in currently has seen a plethora of benefits in our society, it's unfortunate that we have reached a point where we no longer can appreciate our surroundings, since we constantly have our faces buried in a phone. Below, we've compiled a list of three opportunities that you have on a daily basis to enjoy your life, sans smart phone:

#1: Eating at a Restaurant

It's borderline sad sitting at a restaurant, looking around, and seeing the majority of diners immersed in their cell phones. There is a serious lack of interaction between people eating together and this sort of lack of conversation indicates a regression in engaging relationships within our society. If you're meeting someone for a meal, do yourselves both a favor and leave the phones in pockets/purses/cars. Enjoy their company.

#2: Taking a Walk

Let's get one thing straight- walking while staring at your phone is NOT a safe way to get around. Believe me, I speak from firsthand experience (I swear that pole came out of nowhere). Furthermore, how can you possibly appreciate the things that you pass everyday, such as the changing colors of the trees, the architecture of your city, the other people, etc., if you are staring at your phone? Daniel Sieberg, author of The Digital Diet: The 4-step plan to break your tech addiction and regain balance in your life, says "Look around and engage with your surroundings. It may be a way to discover a new café or appreciate nature. It’s also an opportunity to be alone and channel your own thoughts instead of bombarded by stimulus".

#3: Spending Time with Your Family

Research has shown that parents who are constantly engaged with their phones while spending time with their children have an increased amount of negative interactions with them. Your kids are only going to be kids for so long- you should enjoy the time that you have with them and be fully present. Your phone will still be there, I promise.
