Chiropractic and Chronic Headaches

Headaches can be the result of a number of problems, but it is not unusual for them to be caused by misaligned vertebrae in the neck. When an x-ray reveals that there is a misalignment, then it is quite possible that it is the cause. Otherwise, a neck problem is probably not the culprit.

Not all headaches can be relieved by chiropractic care, but many people will get relief by making a visit to a chiropractor. Other causes of headaches could be very serious and should not be taken lightly, such as a tumor, or another disease. This is why an accurate diagnosis is essential when there is a problem with headaches.

One major cause of headaches occurs when the vertebrae in your neck puts pressure on your brain or brainstem. A similar cause is from the vertebrae putting pressure on your nervous system. In both cases, realigning of the neck or spine will often bring quick relief. If that is the cause, then an adjustment will often take care of the problem. Studies have shown that when headaches are caused by misalignment of the vertebrae, realignment is very effective. In that case, headaches often disappear and patients enjoy relief even after chiropractic treatment ceases.

Headaches may also be caused by other problems. When there is tension in your upper shoulder, or upper jaw, this can also result in headaches. These muscles can affect your nerves in your spine or neck, which can result in pain. Car accidents or sinus problems are another cause of headaches. This type of headache can often be relieved in a chiropractor's office. Going to a chiropractor first for headache relief is a good idea. After an evaluation, you may find that a simple adjustment, or even a series of them, can get you back to doing your regular activities.
