Supplements for the Heart: Worth It or Not?

Your heart, next to only your brain, is the most important organ in your body. Today, with the obesity epidemic sweeping the world, keeping the heart healthy is incredibly important. There are many supplements on the market for helping the heart, and each have their positives and negatives.

It is no surprise that most supplements cost quite a bit of money, especially for the better quality ones. So the real question is, which supplements are really worth it? Here’s what you need to know before you by a supplement for your heart.

Fish Oil

Fish oil contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. It has been promoted for heart health by many medical experts and health articles. Omega-3 fatty acids are well-known for their ability to lower blood pressure and the heart rate, while also helping to improve the flow through blood vessels, which in turn lowers the risk of heart attack. Studies have also found that fatty fish can lower the risk of heart failure for people who have had heart attacks in the past. It is important to understand though, that fish oils may not have the same impact. In a study done by the New England Journal of Medicine, it was discovered that fish oil supplements actually don’t lower the risk of heart attack in people who are at risk of heart attacks. Protect your heart by eating more fish instead.

Garlic

Garlic have been found to have many health benefits, but studies are now finding that garlic consumed as fresh garlic, dried powdered garlic tablets, and aged garlic extract tablets had no effect of cholesterol levels. The conclusion is to save your money on garlic pills when it comes to supplements for your heart.

Red Yeast Rice

For thousands of years, traditional Chinese medicine has touted the benefits of red yeast rice as a way to keep the heart healthy. It has been found that red yeast rice does contain a chemical that can lower cholesterol rates but in a study of 12 different products that use red yeast rice, it was found that the products contained only a small percentage of the red yeast rice. Even worse was that one third of the products contained citrinin, a toxic compound known to cause kidney failure. Pure red yeast rice can help, but the purity of the product is the biggest factor to consider.

Your heart health matters, which is why you should probably skip the supplements all together and stick with a healthy diet and exercise regime instead.
