When Was the Last Time You Truly Laughed ?

Sometimes we get so busy eating healthy, exercising, working a lot, and keeping our lives together, that those lighter than air, really funny moments just get missed.

Making time for casual meetings with friends over coffee or brews, treating the family to special little surprises and outings, or planning weekend getaways can be great ways to share humor.

But remembering to weave in a little humor wherever we are is unmatched for keeping everything level.

Watch for the funny moments wherever you are

I used to work with a fellow who could spot the irony in every situation and often cracked me up with lots of little comments. Our boss was not always thrilled, but it often saved the day for both of us.

Share funny stories, books and shows with your friends and family

Teaching your kids to see the funny side and sharing those moments is always a good idea. Then one funny story or comment often leads to a whole group of favorites.

Break out old time funny movies when the day has really lagged

Sometimes at the end of the day when the work has really piled up just dropping back with my favorite old movie can take the edge off everything and help me relax and recover.

Use humor to regroup when everything goes sideways

This can be invaluable when you have just had it and there is nothing good to be said about the day. My grandfather was a master at recovering situations. He would chuckle and then ask some absurd question that made everyone giggle. Helping your children to recover from upside down situations can start with something funny that relaxes everyone and restores perspective.

That perspective can help our health too when we learn to use it as a tool throughout life.

HelpGuide.org explains how laughter really is the best medicine

Laughter relaxes the whole body for up to 45 minutes after, erasing tension and stress. It boosts the immune system, triggers the release of endorphins, promoting a sense of well being, and it protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow protecting you from heart attacks and heart diseases.

Laughter is emotionally healthy

Humor can help you keep that right side up remaining positive and optimistic whatever comes up. It’s really contagious too. The more you reach out to others with smiles or positive comments, the better climate you create for everyone. Think of people you know who can always manage a smile, while others seem to never have anything good to say.

Finally, learning to enjoy laughter can surprise you. Suddenly the day does not seem quite so long. Laughter brings its own resilience, yours for the taking whenever and wherever.
