Soothe a Sore Throat Naturally!

By Sara Butler

It’s not just illness in the winter that can cause your throat to be sore, it’s the dry air, too. If you find that your throat is feeling scratchy, you don’t have to reach for the neon-hued syrup in your medicine cabinet. There are some very natural ways to make your throat feel better that you can make in your very own kitchen. Here are some natural ways to soothe your tender tonsils.

The Throat Coat

You might be envisioning wrapping your throat up in a little parka, and that’s not too far from the truth. You can use warm lemon-infused honey water to coat your throat and soothe lingering irritation. If you can find a tea that has licorice in it, it also has been known to have soothing anti-inflammatory effects to help you feel better.

Gargle Away

You’ve probably heard that gargling with warm salt water is a good treatment for a sore throat, and that is true. But you can take it to the next level by using that licorice-infused tea previously mentioned. If you can’t find the tea, there are licorice powders or syrups you can buy instead, but just make sure they contain real licorice and not just flavoring. That won’t do you any good!

You can also gargle with apple cider vinegar. It’s not as harsh as other vinegars on the market and can help to numb your throat if it’s really sore as it works to soothe it. However, look for the organic apple cider vinegar just to keep it as healthy as possible.

Look at Your Bedroom

As with any ailment, prevention is really the best medicine. If your throat is always sore when you wake up in the morning, then it may be because you’re breathing through your mouth all night and irritating your throat with the dry air. If this is the case, then look into using a humidifier in your room to help. You may also want to utilize your pillows to support your head differently as you sleep to keep you from breathing through your mouth so much. If you can pinpoint things to change around in your bedroom, then you may be able to wake up without a sore throat.

No matter what, you shouldn’t ignore a sore throat that has been around for more than a week. This might be a sign of a more serious problem, so make sure you get it checked out -- especially if you have severe pain and difficulty swallowing.
