4 Stretches to Alleviate Neck Pain

There is no doubt that neck pain is one of the worst pains to suffer from in day to day life. It’s not really that it hurts any more than other types of pain, it’s just that we use our necks for virtually everything. When we get a stiff or sore neck, everything from driving to lifting to simply looking around becomes more difficult and painful. What makes it even worse is that almost every adult will suffer from neck pain at some point in their lives. If you find that neck pain has become a pesky staple in your life, try these stretches that help to relieve pain in the neck.

Cardio- Technically, this is supposed to be talking about stretching, I know, but keeping your cardio up is important for overall health. The better your cardio, the more likely you are to be flexible, strong, and in shape. This combination helps to combat pain all over the body, including pain experienced in the neck. Simple walking, jogging, or biking are excellent ways to keep your cardio in good shape.

Neck rolls- This stretch is very simple. Leaving your shoulders down, take your ear to your shoulder on the same side. It probably won’t touch, and if it is touching, you probably need to drop your shoulder. Hold it there for 5-10 seconds. Then slowly roll it forward and on to the opposite side. Repeat as many times as feels comfortable, but shoot for a minimum of five rotations. Make sure that you do this slowly, as doing it too quickly will negate the benefits that you are hoping for.

Cobra- If you’ve ever tried yoga, you might be slightly familiar with this, though this one is slightly different as it is targeted for the neck. Lay flat on your stomach with your hands down by your sides. Now, lift your head and upper back off of the floor, keeping your eyes forward. Hold for 5-10 seconds and rest. Repeat.

Look for cars- This one is good for those with a stiff neck, or even for those in an advanced age. For this stretch, turn the head as if you were looking backward over your shoulder. Turn it as far as it will comfortably go, and then hold. Switch sides. Keep the shoulders down and the chin parallel with the shoulders.

Though these stretches can certainly help, sometimes it’s important to seek more help. Getting chiropractic care on a regular basis can prevent further neck pain. Through manual spinal manipulation, chiropractors can align the spine properly to help allow for pain free living. If you’re looking for a chiropractor, try The Joint...the Chiropractic Place.
